Community members are taking action to help make the Decoto district safer with the launching of a new neighborhood watch program. The program will be the first based in the heart of the historically troubled neighborhood, organizers said. Leaders from Congregations Organizing for Renewal and Our Lady of the Rosary Church are inviting the public to attend a presentation from the Union City Police Department's Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving unit, to be held Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the church.
By Eric Kurhi Oakland Tribune Community leaders and the school district are taking aim at a problem that, while not exclusive to Hayward, has long plagued its schools: a disparity in test scores that has black students lagging behind their peers. School officials met with a church full of members of Congregations Organizing for Renewal -- a faith-based group that takes up social causes -- in May, at which time they agreed to make the achievement gap a priority and to create a task force to help address the problem.

On Wednesday June 29th, almost 200 community members gathered at Our Lady of the Rosary Church for CommUNITY Dreams, a COR celebration for the city’s 5-0 vote in support of a resolution to pass the DREAM Act, the city’s allocation of $1.6 million dollars for a renovated teen center, and the continued support for youth counselors as part a larger youth violence prevention strategy won in 2008.

"There was a young boy with an ear infection, and he couldn't get in to see a primary physician at a hospital for nine days," said Pat Payne, a member of a congregation-based group petitioning to get a clinic in Cherryland. "The consequences were very serious. He had an infection that spread and paralyzed a whole side of his face and impaired his hearing." Such were the horror stories told at a Thursday meeting with Supervisor Nate Miley, who has been working with Congregations Organizing Renewal to address some of the most critical needs of Cherryland residents.

Valle characterized TRI-CED's future regional education center as a "human infrastructure" because "it's an investment in our kids," he said. On Friday, Valle, the mayor, police officers, and representatives from Chabot College, the youth coalition and Congregations Organizing for Renewal gathered at TRI-CED and called on their congressman to urge funding for the proposed regional education center.

Karen Yifru, a member of the Youth Violence Prevention Coalition as well as Congregations Organizing for Renewal, said the city first must conduct a crime data analysis to identify where problems are occurring in the city and who's causing them. Funding priority also should go toward hiring community outreach workers, Spanish-speaking counselors and staff to help at-risk youths with job placements to keep them off the streets, Yifru said.

More than 800,000 children in California do not have insurance —about 27,000 of them in Alameda County. "I have asthma and it is scary when I can't breathe," Estephany said. "My asthma also makes school hard because every time I have an attack I miss up to a week." One time, Estephany's parents brought her to the emergency room but she was turned away because she was not insured, she said. Her parents had to take her to another hospital.
COR is working to create job opportunities for hard to employ youth and young adults, especially in the growing green economy.
